PostSubject: Colour of storehouse help   Colour of storehouse help EmptySat Jun 22, 2013 4:48 pm

Below are a couple of pictures of a building I intend doing a Rorke's Drift diorama with. Its a farm building by Britains which is a darn sight cheaper than their Rorke's Drift building and bigger as well.

I posted a picture of it on another topic.

Could I please have you views on the coulor you think I should do the brickwork. At the moment its slate grey. Do you think I should paint the brick work cream/white? or just leave it and change the roof to straw.
What would you do chaps?
The building its 1.32 scale

Hi David68,
Most rural buildings in Natal in the 1870's were built out of natural stone. Normally those pulled out of the maize fields on the farm so that plowing could be umimpeded These irregularly shaped stones would have been mid brown colured, but varigated, Roofs were normally thatch or in some cases corrugated iron. Slate, as depicted in your model was not common then at all.

regards

barry

PS: suggest that you get a picture of the RD mission after the attack for an idea of the type of stonework to copy.

Hi David
Ive posted at various times photos of RD. When the hospital/home was rebuilt existing stone was reused. Have a look and you will get an idea of the color. Fully agree with Barry, definitly no slate. If you recall the roof thatch was set on fire. so local thatch dark brown to grey.

Hope that helps.

There is an account somewhere on the forum. I think by Rev Smith? Who gave an overview of Rorkes Drift explaining the layout of the grounds, and buildings.

Thank you for the info. The roof was always going to be changed as I know the slates are totaly wrong. I will have a look through the threads you speak of for some ideas.
Thanks again for your help.
