Do we know what Lt Raws movements were after he discovered the Zulu army, and was force to retreat back to the camp. The reason I ask, is on another thread " Source for faulty revolver " Springbok posted a list of those who mace the crossing in order. It shows Raw as being the first. What part, apart from annoying the Zulus did Raw play?

Springbok wrote:
Ive tried for years to put together a crossing list at Fugitives Drift.
These are some of the men that can be placed into order.
Raw
Mcphail
Moodie
Vause
Gardner
Essex
Stafford
Curling
Smith Dorrien
Williams
Bickley
Coghill
Brickhill
Higginson
Melvill
Foley.

All of the above are in some way referenced by sight or timing.

Theres a case to be made for many others, even for changing the above.

Cheers

There's not much on Raw's escape from Isandlwana, would be intersting to know what time he left the Battlefield. He did witness the death of Vereker, it was Raw who gave him a horse, only for Vereker to give back to its owner!

Did Raw leave an account of his escape?

Impi,

To my knowledge Raw left two accounts of iSandlwana, an official one and a private one recorded in his diary.

Both accounts appeared in The Journal of the Anglo-Zulu War Research Society Volume 7/2, in an article written by Paul Raw.
