Very interesting stuff springy mate, yes, get the others posted up as well. agree

Like Steve, I am fascinated with maps, the old OS maps have me in deep study with the magnifyer, and I could look at the old OS large scale maps of yesteryear for ages. Godfrey editions do a good selection of them, however, you can also find some of the old OS large scale maps on line, but unfortunately they are only in small portions, so you have to keep going back and clicking on the main map to get another portion of it, and sometimes it's not the same scale, very frustrating.  Mad

Cheers mate.  Salute

Springbok. All these maps we see, must have originated from an original. The problem I'm having with these maps is, the ones the drew them, wasn't actually at Isandlwana on the day. So the arrangements of the Compaines in the various locations must have come from survivors, do we know who of the survivors fed the information to those who compiled the maps.

LH
I would imagine a variety of sources. Newman was 'on site' and would have not only seen the camp before hand but also on the return. He would have been able to talk to most of the survivors. I do know that John Young is of the opinion that he copied his map from another source. But he does sign, "from memory."
Gardner and Essex would have contributed as Im sure would all of the survivors at Helpmakaar.
Cheers

Sorry LH should have added that there is still no great certainty on the exact line up of the companies. From Jackson to Snook there are many different interpretations.

Captain Mudge RE had first used the top of St Paul's in 1799 to set his baseline when commanded to begin mapping the low lying ground of Essex, which was seen as the prime location for an invasion by Napoleon. This was the very first survey and subsequent OS map (together with Kent).

Mudge initially tried to use Hampstead Heath in the North and Shooters Hill in the South, but the smog of London (even then) proved impenetrable even when he used flares bright enough to be seen across the Channel. In 1848 a new map of London on a 5 Foot scale was requested by the Sewers Commission which took two years to complete, the platform over St Paul's was erected by the Royal Sappers and Miners, and the Surveyor, James Steele, made 10,000 observations over four months. The Ordnance Survey made the most minute and accurate survey of London then in existence (with acknowledgement to Rachel Hewitt).

This of course was all being repeated in India by, among others, Captain George Everest.

Many thanks Steve for the information and images.  Salute

Great knowledge my friend.  agree

And also many thanks to LH for the image.  Salute

That looks pretty precarious up there, I wouldn't fancy being up there in a high wind  No

I have always been interested in maps, especially the old large scale OS maps, these show the different areas in great detail. You can see the layouts of the streets and roads etc, as they were back then, and also the layouts of goods yards, engine sheds and sidings of the now long closed and ripped up railways, and the countryside paths and old moorland mine workings and quarries of years gone by, fascinating stuff.

Thanks again chaps, much appreciated.
