John,

Think away but you'd be wrong, the guy you have picked out is a Private armed with a Martini-Henry, and wearing a single ammunition pouch.

As Kenny has pointed out it is Captain Farquhar Glennie's reformed G Company 2nd/24th.

The other officer in the group is Lieutenant Alfred Cromwell Worlledge, who has one of the lines going up to him looking to his right.

I doubt the item on E-Bay is an original photograph, more than likely a colour copy.

The photograph has appeared in a number of books including Nothing Remains but to Fight.

Some interesting attire here and there. Looks like some are wearing woolen jumpers, woolen hats and neckerchiefs. More like sailors!

Les,

Four of identities you can discount straight off.

J. Jobbins - is clearly an non-commissioned officer with chevrons, and is therefore not John Jobbins.

W. Allen - cannot be William Allan, who had been invalided home.

W. Roy - cannot be William Roy of the 1st/24th, as he too had been invalided home.

G. Smith - cannot be Sgt. George Smith as he is actually Sgt. Joseph Windridge.

Isn't it Spot the Dog, or is that Wally in disguse? Joker

I could be dreaming, but was there not a suggestion at some point that the soldier marked as W. Roy may be Hook?

The Sergeant, two to the right of Bromhead, is Henry Gallagher.

Thanks Steve, JY, i personally don't have confidence in any of the sitter's
unless i have matched them with known photos post defense, facial hair
apart, ones features tend to stay more or less the same, the person who
tried to identify with such authority as JY knows is Toby Giese in his odd
little publication entitled The Men of the 24th, below i will add his stab at
another well known photo, noting the time, no choking on Cocoa. Very Happy

PostSubject: Re: Company of the 24th?   Company of the 24th? EmptyThu Sep 18, 2014 7:59 pm

Richie,

This is the 'reconstituted' G Company 2/24th taken at Pinetown in October 1879. Members of the original G Company under Pope were killed at Isandlwana. So what you have in the photograph are men posted in from other companies of 2/24th and those drafted to South Africa after the disaster on 21/22 January 1879.  All though there are medal rolls and pay & muster rolls none of these indicate which company the man belongs.  No Company rolls survive. There is the company clerk's notebook for C Company 2/24th - June 1879 which survives and indicates quite a mixture in the company - those who were out with LC on 21 January, those posted in on re-org of 2/24th before 2nd invasion of Zululand at Dundee, and drafts who had arrived from UK.

For 1/24th if you are looking for who was in which company on 21 January, then you can get someway there, i.e.:

B Company at Fort Harrisson - criteria: Survived and clasp 1879
D & G Companies - Helpmekaar - criteria: Survived and clasp 1877-8-9
A, C, E & H Companies + Band - criteria: Killed at Isandlwana - you could probably isolate H Company personnel from the others killed - because a St Helena pay & muster roll (1876-1877) exists in the National Archives.

Those of 1/24th who were left behind back in PMB - would have the medal - no clasp.

Best I can do.
