| In my opinion it was made an hour ago. you could buy the raw materials and get any half competent joiner to ' knock one up ' if you look carefully at the wood, copper, there is no sign whatever of age, it clearly states its a repro, and that is fair enough, the label looks straight off the printer..and the guy could not even be bothered to line up the screws..it would be excellent for keeping socks and smalls in..but look at the price! again he's having a laugh..there's to much of this sort floating about..but this is my opinion, and its just one. i'm sure someone will look at this with a less jaundiced and cynical view. and enjoy it just for what it represents. but the price! wow. |

| Hi Les I'm aware it's a replica but the price is a guide to what some people are prepared to pay for something which is a likeness of the original ! . If there are any budding woodworking people out there , this could be a nice earner , if you are prepared to buy , and use , the actual timber used etc , along with the technical specifications . I'll bet Neil could make a doozy !! Cheers 90th |

| Hiya Gary, i agree with all that! the price just took my breath away. maybe because i'm on a restricted income. yeah Neil would do one in his sleep.. i think my way to go would be to go to an antique salvage yard, source a bit of old teak..same with the copper with evidence of verdigris and a few victorian screws. i said for socks and smalls but it could hold anything practical.. cheers Les |

| I've got five thumbs when it comes to Carpentry. Not a bad replica at all, could do with the inside painting with a metallic silver to replicate the lining, and have a tin framing, but otherwise very good indeed, including the correct stampings which is particularly good IMO. The maker hasn't fallen into the trap of putting "rolled case" on the label, which would not have existed until 1885. 9.9 out of ten, but the small mortgage needed put me off. |

| Interesting comments Neil, i wonder if you would like to rate the one shown, which by the way i would have in a flash.. you gave the advertised above, a 9 out of ten, even with the omissions. the small mortgage was very prophetic.. It went for 355.00 US 217.55 GBP 397.77 AD 3826.55 R..... |

| No mate you just rightly flagged it up! the world is upside down to me, today on e bay there was the pull out from the Graphic showing the Zulu King on his way to meet Wolseley escorted by the 60th and The KDG's, so to me it did'nt look quite right so i bid anyway, it was at a fiver, i e mailed the seller asking if it was the genuine article, he said it was..i was not convinced so i left it.. it went for £12.50! its official i know nothing about anything anymore..cheers xhosa |

| But referring to the video i posted the other night which brought the wrath of admin apon me..the thread was in danger of becoming a little tense so i posted gangster shark with the intention of lightning the mood, which of course has a serious message highlighting the ecology, a message that can not be re- peated enough in my opinion..i was then going to start a new thread as the gangster shark had mild and amusing references to drug use! i was going to use that to refer to the drug use during the AZW, we have well documented accounts of Zulu drug usage be it ganja or hallucinogenics... i wonder if anybody knew of the ' other side ' using drugs..not solely as pain relief but maybe recreational as well..the Colonials would of been aware of Cannabis. and i further wonder what drugs would be available in the nineteenth century. by the way i write this as a man drug and alcohol free..but i have certainly ' dabbled ' with both in my younger days..
As a footnote, it is well recorded that the troops in WW1 had Dexedrine Amphetamine ( speed ) issued on a regular basis to ward off sleep during night attacks and covert sorties, |
