On the CWGC database a record for Thomas Thomas Private 3710 Royal Defence Corps who Died 09 Sept 1920, aged 61 had interesting additional information; Served in the Kafir and Zulu campaigns, 1897-8. (Was at Rourke's Drift).  Can anyone help with details of this soldiers involvement in the African campaigns and in particular confirm he was at Rourke’s Drift.
Thanks

You might be correct John, I could well be confusing the Thomas Thomas's.

But I am surprised that there is nothing appearing about a Thomas Thomas in a search, as he has been mentioned quite a number of times on the forum, mostly for his proven lies regarding events in the AZW.

Ive just gone through RD by those who were there, no mention of Thomas Thomas. The only Thomas I can come up with is 25B/1280 John Thomas ( Real name Peter Sawyer) Served B Company at RD, 82 in India, entitled to SAGS 77-78-79.
Discharged 25/2/89
No mention in The Silver Wreath either.

Cheers

His number in the Royal Defence Corps in 1920 would not have been his number or Corps/Regiment in 1879.

Dannemois

If you are referring to 2-24/1415 Thomas Thomas then...

This 2/24th soldier came from Ystalyfera in Wales. A letter home to his uncle and aunt from Rorke’s Drift, dated 19th February, 1879, is extant in both Welsh and English versions. They were published in Y Gwladgarwr, 18th March 1879; Y Genedl Gymreig, 24th April 1879; and in the North Wales Express, 18th April 1879.30 From the ambiguity of the content it could be interpreted that the writer participated in the battle of Isandhlwana and it has appeared in print as a letter from a bona fide survivor.31 In reality, Thomas was out with his battalion as a member of Chelmsford’s reconnaissance on the 22nd January. Thomas is either deliberately not telling the truth or, to be generous, his writing in the first person plural has been taken literally when what he actually intended to convey was the third person plural.

31 Conway, Alan, ‘Welsh Soldiers in the Zulu War’, The National Library of Wales Journal, V/XI, No. 1,
(Summer 1959); Laband, John and Mathews, Jeff, Isandlwana, (Pietermaritzburg and Ulundi, 1992), p 54.

Thanks to all who replied to my request. I don't think he is the Thomas Thomas from Ystalyfera. The Thomas Thomas of my interest died in 1920 aged 61 and buried in Pentwyn Fochriw (St Mary) Churchyard, grave C. 9. 9. (S.W. part). Son of David and Esther Thomas; husband of Gwenllian Thomas, of 13, East Street, Fochriw.

Either he enlisted under another name or he's a fraud.  At a distance of 1920 I suggest the latter but look for earlier claims.
There was a 2-24/1104 Thomas Thomas but he was not at RD but was out with Chelmsford.
