Does anyone have any further information on Trooper Charles Edward Fletcher (Natal Carbineers) who apparently survived Isandlwana? I've located a photo of a gravestone in Pietermaritzburg with this name on it but want to try & ascertain whether it's the same person. The date of death on the grave is given as 11th October 1887.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Tim

Hi Tim
Belatedly picking up on this. He is listed as a survivor in Stalker. He wrote to the provincial government in 1884 looking for employment, I don't have a record of any reply though. There was also a CE Fletcher from the Victorian Rifles served in the Boer war, definitely an Aussie though.

Cheers

Hi Tim
Charles Edward Fletcher is also listed as a survivor in Julian Whybra's Englands' Sons ; page 10 . Fletcher isnt listed in Harold Raugh's Bibliography , it's possible he never left a written account . Julian would know I'd expect , but I'm not to sure he still frequents the Forum due to commitments ? .

Thanks Springbok/90th for the info,

The fact that Charles Fletcher was still alive in 1884 makes it all the more possible then that the grave in Pietermaritzburg Cemetery is his (although of course not concrete proof!)

According to England's Sons he didn't leave an account of his escape, and he was the uncle of Tpr. William Fletcher NMP killed in action at Isandlwana.

Regards, Tim

Hi Tim
Yes it's very possible , as by my last post , C.E.Fletcher was indeed a Wagon maker from P'maritzburg ! . So , a good chance the grave you speak of , is very possibly his ? .
