"Born Armagh, Co. Tyrone, Charles Cairns enlisted at Glasgow on 16/3/1864. At time of enlistment he was 19 years of age and gave his trade as labourer. Cairns never rose above the rank of Private and was eventually discharged on 10/11/1885, after 21 years and 240 days with the colours. In addition to service at home, service papers confirm 9 years and 230 days in India and 6 years and 245 days in South Africa, the latter period of overseas service being from 26/2/1879 to 28/10/1885. Cairns
was discharged as a result of the "termination 2nd period limited engagement. The 58th Foot also saw service during the Firs Boer War 1880-81. Private Cairns service papers confirm that he was serving in South Africa during the period of that campaign. During the First Boer War the 58th Foot saw action at Laing's Nek, 28/1/1881 and Majuba Mountain, 27/2/1881. Service papers confirm service during “Boer War 1880-81”

Looking at Cairn's service record he wouldnt have landed in Sth Africa till August if not Sept ! , well and truly after Ulundi which was July 4th , he was still in the UK when that battle took place . I think the war actually ended in September .
