Ulundi No , they were built after the battle . There were no existing ( man made ) rock , or brick walls used as barriers , during the battle of Jan 22-23 , 1879 , the only barriers were made from Mealie Bags , sacks , and biscuit boxes etc etc . Happy to be corrected 90th

The photograph you posted above was taken at Fort Northampton. Which was on the Zulu bank of the Buffalo (Mzinyathi) River.
It was therefore on the opposite side of the river to the Mission Station which was defended in 1879.
