What do we know about this photograph?
Is it known if the three officers were particular good friends?
Where was it taken?

Regards

Hi Ciroferrara

The above photograph is published in Ian Knight's book "ZULU, Isandlwana & Rorke's Drift 22-23 January 1879"

The caption reads:-

"Three officers of the 24th photographed on the eve of the Anglo-Zulu War: Lieutenants Cavaye (left) and Porteous (centre), with Captain William Degacher. Porteous wears the officers' scarlet frock, the other two dark blue patrol jackets. All three die at Isandlwana. ("SB" Bourquin)

Graves1879,

The identification is erroneous left to right: Porteous; Cavaye (standing) & William Degacher.

I have seen a photo of the Cavaye Family when Charles Walter must have been five or six and He
has a very dominant role as in the photo I posted above.

Ciroferrara,

That he is a commissioned officer.

Sergeants - in most, but not all regiments - wore the sash over the right shoulder.

If he were I doubt he would have been able to slip out to the Kisch Brothers' Studio for the photograph.

Campaign chair. Campaign beards. You can see the fly of the tent. I always think, looking at the photo, how tired they look.

On a lighter side , if it's taken in Coghill's tent maybe he took the photo which would explain his absence ? Joker

Just out of interest!

"Captain Degacher was the maternal grandfather of Academy Award-winning actor and World War II British Army officer David Niven"

Peter,

Further to your just out interest comment, another little snippet of trivia.

In 1868 the great-grandparents and grandmother of David Niven’s batman in the Second World War were held hostage, amongst the force that rescued them was a certain Frederic Augustus Thesiger, later the 2nd Baron Lord  Chelmsford.

Peter,

Especially when you know the identity of Lt.-Col. Niven’s batman - Private Peter Alexander von Ustinov, later Sir Peter Ustinov.

I would never have put Ustinov in the army! But of course you are correct.

"Ustinov served as a private in the British Army during World War II, including time spent as batman to David Niven while writing the Niven film The Way Ahead. The difference in their ranks‍—‌Niven was a lieutenant-colonel and Ustinov a private‍—‌made their regular association militarily impossible; to solve the problem, Ustinov was appointed as Niven's batman"

Got anymore like that John.
