"Thomas Truscott served on numerous ships between May 1875 and June 1995 and was aboard Shah August 1876-October 1879, thus not only serving in the Zulu War but also took part in the engagement between Shah and the Peruvian iron-clad turret ship Huascar on 29 May 1877. In company with the corvette Amethyst, Shah engaged the rebel iron-clad in a 3 hour engagement. However, the Huascar managed to escape to shallow waters at the close of day and a subsequent cutting out expedition also failed.

He would later serve with Invincible during the 1882 Egypt Campaign."

I have that Medal as being sold by Justin when I checked on the 13 / 2 / 15 ? . Although I didnt check the link Littlehand Shocked

The "Huascar" was built by us and sold to the Peruvian Navy, later it was used in the Peruvian Civil War in 1877 and became a menace to the shipping lanes, so we tried to sink it!

HMS Shah used the newly invented torpedo for the very first time in the engagement and gave accurate fire from a mast mounted gatling gun (no doubt one of those used later in Zululand).

The Huascar survives to this day, now in the Chilean navy, as a floating museum.

Thomas Truscott was Portsmouth born a bred and lived there all his life. He was a skilled labourer in the Dockyard in the 1911 census and died in 1928. He was also entitled to the Egypt medal 1882 with the clasp Alexandria.
