| The 'Red Soldier, Letters from the Zulu War 1879' . there are a couple of used copies on Amazon for £53, the cost of the hardback book is selling at around £241. Has anyone else got this book and would £53 be a fair price. I'm only asking because my better half said that she would like to buy it for me for Christmas, it just seem rather pricey. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Waterloo . A very important book as it's comprised of letters and Diary entries of those who were actually there in S.A and wrote what they were thinking and feeling at the time , on my list of must have's it's certainly on it ! . . I'm assume that you are a regular buyer Ebay ? , if not , be aware of the postage costs , they can make a decent priced purchase an expensive one , especially coming from the USA . Where do you live Waterloo ? 90th

Waterloo just to illustrate how I feel about the book. I have two copies, a hardback first edition and a second paperback that I use for reference, its covered in 'stickies' and notes sticking out of it. Its invaluable.

A link from the The South African Military History Society. This will be old news for some members but I wanted to post a link in which Frank Emery had written additional notes regarding his book 'The Red Soldier The Anglo-Zulu War as Depicted in Soldiers' Letters 'Vol 5 No 5 - June 1982 by Frank Emery 'In 'The Red Soldier' my main purpose was to illustrate the first-hand evidence that lies in a specific course of information, namely the private letters written by soldiers who fought in the Anglo-Zulu War.(1) In this paper I wish to take the exercise further by drawing on fresh letters that have come to light since the book was published in 1977. I wish also to assess the strengths and shortcomings of the letters in general as data for studying the Campaign.' [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Hi Martin, That was my first visit to the SAMHS site, I will be visiting it again, I have almost finished reading one of the papers written by S Bourquin entitled 'THE ZULU MILITARY ORGANIZATION AND THE CHALLENGE OF 1879...its very good. I have had a bit of difficulty accessing the SAMHS lecture archives, would you happen to know how to get hold of them? Regards Waterloo

Hi waterloo. You know mate, I have not got a clue how to access the SAMHS archives, I just use the site to try to get what I am looking for. Most of the time I just google it and look at the results and select the SAMHS site if it is shown in the google results. There must be a way into the archives, however, I have never tried to enter them so sorry mate, I don't know. Maybe someone will come up with the answer, Barry for instance, or even Springy (Frank), someone will know what to do to get into the SAMHS archives, just keep watching this space and maybe the answer will appear. Sorry I can't help you with that my friend.

Hi Martin, I had a look at the SAMHS site today and they have added a site search engine, I have used it and found exactly what I was after. I entered Isandlwana into the search bar and had 121 pages of archives titles available. Here is a link. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Regards Waterloo
