I wondered if anyone could advise where I might find out any more info regarding the service of the above ancestor (1849-1900). I have his 1879 SA medal (shield and assegais) and am visiting the battlefields next month Feb 2016.

Hi, and welcome.

Lt. C Michell appears on the medal roll for 3/60th Rifles entitled to the 1879 bar. At the time of the award he was with the 2/60th. He subsequently gained the rank of Captain. His service papers ought to be at the National Archives but I cannot see him in the index. He married Louisa Rachel Orde-Powlett on 18 January 1883 and died at Leyburn in Yorkshire. Six companies of the 3/60th served at Gingindlovu and the regiment remained in SA and took part in the 1st Boer War.
