There is a discussion on the cross on the forum somewhere. I think it was placed there by one of the bishops, but can't think of his name. However I beleive it disappeared years ago? Could be wrong!
The discussion had photos posted by Steve & Frank.

There remains an iron cross on a now anonymous grave within the Colonial cemetery on the battlefield, another was placed on Lt. Pope's grave at some point although this has long since disappeared along with various other individual grave markers.

Regards,

Tim

Thanks Tim.
Took this from Mitfords book.

"below the ' neck' stands the iron cross erected by the Bishop of Maritzburg on the occasion of his holding a funeral service there.

Thanks 90th / Graves.

Is there any chance that cross could have originated from the neck?

Happy to have been able to help littlehand , thanks Graves , much appreciated mate as always . Possibly it could've found it's way from the Nek , there was a bit of movement re the bones and everything else from memory . Some of the graves were actually marked with pieces of wood , kettles and pots etc , it was a pity these were moved / disturbed / taken or whatever , because names were on those items which showed the location of certain individuals remains.

Couple of thoughts on this grave marker. It looks quite modern and the way the top is hammered over it looks like steel. Second, it does not look any way fancy enough to have been consecrated at a ceremony by a Bishop (Colenso?). The more ornate cast-iron version that can be seen in some of the old photos is a much more likely candidate to my mind.
