My new book the South African Campaign arrived in the post from San Clemente, Italy today, it had been nicely bubble wrapped and placed inside a cardboard box, the box was then placed inside a large green heavy duty gardening sack, which was very thoughtful of the seller, In my haste to get at the book I failed to notice that there was a bloody great spider sat in the bottom of the sack, well I noticed it when it came charging out of that sack and across my dining table. Its somewhere in the Kitchen. It looked like a black widow spider and now I'm having vision of being bitten by the thing, its a good book though. PS if anyone knows anything about spiders this one had a white circle on its back end.

Received the book today for just £2.80 + P&P
Arrived in excellent condition.
Thanks Salute
Pages 21 & 34 are missing!..
That's a shame, page 21 highlights the transport problem. the photographs are of Crealock and Clery..page 22 goes on to describe the columns, more the central column, and the conditions at Helpmaaker. the photograph was half of the 91st spreading over to the next page. a great pic.
Page 34 show's how the 24th marched to Natal to begin the Zulu campaign. it describes how they dyed the helmets, fitted skins around the barrels of weapons, and the general bedraggled state of the uniforms. nice sketch of Frippp's showing the 24th on the march.. the top photograph is of the bayonet of choice.. ' The Lunger '.
The seller might not have been aware of the missing pages. but still, bummer.

I think LH is having a lark, like Steve has said, Graves never mentioned it, in fact, he said it arrived in excellent condition. Unless of course it was LH who sold it.

Thanks for the tip about the ' silver book' guys. It's not one I've heard of before but with all the great comments it was clearly a book to look out for. Happily ABE came up trumps and I've just finished polishing it. Just got to finish Sugdens 'Nelson Sword of Albion' and then I'll tuck in. Only 450 pages to go!
