so not to get off topic in the AMMUNITION CARRIERS thread. were the liners in the boxes like the "spam cans" of modern ammunition? were the wooden boxes, if meant to be reused taken apart and a new "can" put in? or was it just a metal plate placed on the top?

The 1887 edition of the "Treatise" contains a dimensioned diagram (as published in the List of Changes) of the then-current Mark XI and XII ammunition boxes.

You can find diagrams and a description of the changes to boxes here. http://www.victorianwars.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=4023

Free
the lining was captive within the box and was expected to last the lifetime of the box. The tear off lid sealing opening was separate, with the lid soldered into place. Only that bit was disposable.

thank you sir for the reply. I wonder how many of these failed to function and the opener was left standing there with just a pull tab and a surprised look on his face. what would they do? was someone issued a tool to open these in case of an emergency?

Free

In October 1878 MkV ammo box had the "sardine can pull" part of what was officially known as the closing plate repositioned and strengthened. (this did not constititue a change of mark)
