In view of the pending closure of the camp I wonder what the fate of the museum will be?

There is no reason to assume the museum will close is there?. The Aldershot museum has grown larger, even though the camp surrounding it is now new private housing. Same is true for the Rifles and Gurkha museums at Winchester where the old Georgian barracks are now high end apartments. It could in fact be an opportunity to enhance the museum at Brecon. It could I suppose be incorporated into the military museum at Cardiff Castle which would probably mean much better attendance figures. Brecon is not the easiest place to get to.

Well said Steve. Salute

Yes, bring it back home to England. agree

You know it makes sense. Very Happy

I would be there to welcome the old 24th (2nd Warwickshire) regiment back home to England where it rightfully belongs. I would take a very loud speaker and play 'The Warwickshire Lad', no more bloody 'men of Horlicks' for OUR England's Son's. In fact I would up sticks and go and live in Warwick and become the Curator, and I would tell all the vistors the TRUE history of the regiment, not the hoax, from its raising in Kent and its involvement in the AZW that Baker stole from it to make his anti English bias film. I would return the Chillianwallah Colour to its rightful place in St Mary's Church in Warwick, and return the honour and glory to the regiment and make sure that England's son's were never forgotten ever again, the name of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) regiment would be given back its rightful place in history, at that is guarenteed.  agree

I would make the name of 24th (2nd Warwickshire) regiment great again, and I hope that the new POTUS Mr Trump makes America great again. Salute

All
I've just spent some time in Brecon, delivering my books, and researching at the Museum this week. No-one was saying anything about the future. I WAS rather sad to find that some of the things I wanted to look at (in terms of docs/photos/sketches) had been stolen. So I think someone has pre-empted the above argument and has begun to stock their own study as a private museum.

I also visited David Jackson in his nursing home en route and am pleased to say that he is in good health and still has a razor sharp mind when it comes to things Zulu. Those of you who asked me to look at things in the museum and to ask FWDJ specific questions, I did, and I'll be answering you individually.

The Museum phoned me five minutes ago to say they've sold out of the volume IIIs I gave them on Wednesday. I'm just about to post a parcel of more to them. (I hope they will still be open!)

The last time I was at the museum the musket ball removed from Corporal Lyons' body was nowhere to be seen. I asked where it was and nobody knew.

Myself and the staff have either completely missed it or it has gone amiss.

Among some other things there were in particular two pencil sketches of Isandhlwana camp (before and after) and a photo that I wanted to see recommended to me by David Jackson - they were found to be missing in 2004 a note said in the file.

I know it is easy to criticise, and I don't know all the facts, but surely it isn't difficult to keep track of who has access to documents and artefacts. I have read a few times that the museum does not really know what it has in its archive and that is really not good enough in this day and age. It is one thing if things have been missing since 2004, but if the pilfering is more recent then there should be names in the frame  - or don't they keep a record?

I'm not going to criticize because staffing at the museum has in the past been underfunded and I do admire the effort museum staff have made in the past.  Staff are supposed to stay with someone if they are viewing a file or folder - but they are busy and simply can't be there all the time.  I was there all day.  If a visitor is viewing several folders, they can't all be checked page by page, transparency by transparency when returned.  It is also difficult to backtrack a missing document to a particular individual as the 'missing date' only states when it was realized that a document was missing - the criminal might have been any previous viewer.
One answer would be only to let those with genuine bona fide credentials view docs - the interested amateur and those with non-recognized credentials would then be excluded, which would be sad.  That said, some academics I've met who do have genuine bona fides are some of the most untrustworthy cutthroat individuals on the planet.
Another answer would be that no-one gets to view anything - it's all under lock and key.  That sort of defeats the object.
Strip searches on departure perhaps?  Or just invest in some cctv?  Perhaps we could have a whip round for the museum?

ymob
Valuable financially as well as intrinsically. That's the trouble. There are people who will pay well for these items I have no doubt.

It is not easy to prevent a determined thief I know, but I do worry that small museums on limited budgets are often not up to the task of safeguarding valuable artefacts.

I am not sure it is too much to ask that documents are checked to be all present and correct after they have been accessed, or that some discreet identifying device is incorporated in the most obviously valuable and rare. It is of course a matter of risk assessment - they would no doubt watch their medals like a hawk!
CCTV is an obvious and cheap measure that is surely in place already.

I am dying to know who these bona fide researcher cutthroats are, I demand that names be named!

Frank, I believe you. But what about that Aussie bloke?

Police officer to suspect, "Have you visited the museum lately Sir" Suspect Shocked Very Happy

Shocked Shocked Shocked

All good fun Steve, no malice intended. Salute
