Emil Paul Herman Berthold Empty
PostSubject: Emil Paul Herman Berthold   Emil Paul Herman Berthold EmptyTue Jan 31, 2017 4:36 pm

An old goldfields personality, Paul
Berthold, passed away at Bunbury last
week. Paul was a pioneer storekeeper
at Broad Arrow, and was mayor of the
town for several years. The most
Interesting lecture ever given by a
member of the old Broad Arrow Liter-
ary and Debating Society was that of
Paul Berthold on the subject of the rise
and fall of the Zulu race, from their
picturesque organisation under Chaka
to their fall under Cetewayo. Paul
had served in the Zulu war, and had
observed very closely the habits and
instincts of those very interesting
people. Amongst his mementos of the
engagement was his war medal and a
scar on his head received at the hands
of the enemy. Prior to the outbreak
of the goldfields he was a school
teacher at Albany, and was beloved
always for his gentility and retiring
disposition-and a heart of gold.

This obituary appeared in the Sunday Times (Perth, WA) 19330226 newspaper. I do know he married Emma Tryphena Baynes at Pietermaritzberg in 1885 before emigrating to Western Australia later that year.

Is there any information out there to back up this story ?

Thanks for reading.

Going purely on his name, I would think he was a local lad. One of his death notices says he was 73 years old when he died. Which would put him born c1860 and therefore about 19 in 1879. I take it that the local troops would have received a campaign medal but no record exists of individual qualification for such an award.

Just skimming through Terry Sole's 'For God, Queen and Colony', there's a Trooper Powell Berthold listed with the Natal Mounted Police (escort to Lord Wolseley) - from Leipzig, Germany. Attested 24/03/79 aged 20. Discharged 24/03/85.

Extract from Holt's Natal Mounted Police. Page 86

"On the 29th April 1880, just as the cold weather
began, the expedition left Pietermaritzburg. As
many of the men who took part in the escort have left
the corps, and are scattered all over the globe, it may
be of interest to mention the fact that they consisted
of : Sergeant Faddy (in charge) ; Corporals Burgoyne
and W. J. Clarke; Troopers Berthold, W. Brown,
W. D. Campbell, Cooper, F. Evans, Ford, Green,
Heathcote, Hutton, Lockner, Longfield, H. Penne-
father, Piers, Ravenscroft, Russ, Stevens, and Wilmot "

Can't find anything on this chap serving in the Zulu War. The chap mentioned above could be a relative or same surname.

Thanks everybody, It looks like he may have been in Holt's Natal Mounted Police. The website you found is mine.
Berthold is a funny name, is is a common christian name as well as a surname.
Are there any records of medals for the mounted police?

Hi George
Yes there are two publications that have the NMP Rolls , one is the ' South African War Medal 1877-78-79 ; The Medal Roll ' by D.R.Forsyth which has a Berthold listed but no initial , he was entitled to the Medal with 1879 Clasp , the other book is the one Tim quoted from , which is Terry Sole's ' For God , Queen & Colony ' , and the Berthold in it is named a Powell Berthold as Tim said in his earlier post .

Hi GB,
There is a picture already on this forum of a much younger Berthold.
This trooper was one of the 19 man NMP escort for the French Royal visit in 1880.
A search will bring up this group in a photo posted earlier on this forum.

The Evening Star (Boulder, WA : 1898 - 1921) Mon 19 Jun 1899

On Tuesday the Broad Arrow Literary
and Debating Society held the usual weekly
meeting. A lecture was given by Mr Paul
Berthold on " My Experiences of the Zulu
War." There was a good attendance, the
chair being occupied by Mr C. S. Yeo. The
lecture proved very interesting, Mr Berthold
giving a brief outline of the foundation
and organisation of the Zulus as a powerful
and warlike people. Examples were given
of their bravery and utter indifference to
death, as well of their exemplary discipline
under their indunas and king. Then fol-
lowed a graphic and vivid description of the
the Isandula disaster (in which the whole of
the 24th Rifles were decimated), and the
sight which met the eyes of the lecturer and
his comrades when falling back to the base
of operations, to find that the Zulus had
outgeneralled them, that not a man was left
at Isandula ; that cannon, rifles, ammuni-
tion, and provisions were gone, and that a
last desperate stand had been made around
the wagons, was shown by the heaped-up
corpses which lay there. The heroic stand
at Rorke's Drift was well spoken of
Drawings in South Africa by the lecturer
were shown. Altogether an interesting and
instructive evening was spent, concluding
with a hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer.

If true then his name should have appeared in the rollcall of the NMP, but didn't.
