What do we know about His family?
Cavaye is I assume a French Surname?
I know He studied at Edinburgh University and graduated M.A.
His Father was a General born with the surname Cathcart in Kingston Jamaica
but later adopted his mothers surname Cavaye?
So three questions.
1: What did Charles Walter Cavaye study at Edinburgh University?
2: Why did his father adopt his mothers last name?
3: Did the families income have a connection to Jamaica?

Charles Walter Cavaye graduated from Edinburgh University in April 1867 with a M.A in Science. (Source:  The Edinburgh University Calendar For The Year 1867-68)

Charles Walter Cavaye’s paternal grandfather William Cathcart married Claire Cavaye.  Their son William Cathcart Cavaye, married Isabella Jane Hutchinson and were the parents of Charles Walter Cavaye.  It looks like his grandfather adopted his grandmother’s surname. (Source: Ancestry.com)

This sounds like rather a good book. French slave owners this time. The rather more free wheeling morals of the late Georgian period really do cause problems for their very much more straight laced Victorian descendants - the British ones at least.

So the book in question would definitely suggest a French and possible mulatto heritage. What kind of effect could that have had on the young Charles Walter Cavaye? The fact that he studied science at Edinburgh university would lead me to think he intended to become a doctor? So why a change to become an army officer? Perhaps at his fathers suggestion?
Any thoughts welcome

Cavaye was not French nor is there any evidence that he had he any recent French ancestors.  It seems as though he had a great-grandfather (Claire's father, of that name) who no doubt in the distant past had a French Huguenot ancestor or perhaps, even further back, was one of William's followers.  The French surname (spelt with an acute accent on the e) is a variant of Cavailler or Cavaller and originates in the Aude and the Pyrenees.  But Cavaye is about as French as Butcher or Fletcher and now Cavayes can be found in the UK, Canada, the US, Australia and NZ as well as France.

The Scotsman says

" Lieutenant Charles Walter Cevaye was the second son of General Cevaye, of 12, Royal-circus, Edinburgh. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University, where he obtained his M.A. degree in 1303, Mr. Cavaye then entered Sandhurst Military College, from which, after distinguishing himself as a student, ho was gazetted to the Ist Battalion 24th Regiment in December, 1871. He was stationed with his regiment for some time at Gibraltar, and then proceeded to South Africa, and took part in the frontier campaign of 1577-7S against the Gaikas and Galekas."

This is an extract from the book I referenced earlier by a descendant (Need a body Cry by Dorothy Cavaye). Although a novel it purports to be based on extensive family history research. If it is to be believed, the connection to a French Cavaye is rather more recent than either Huguenot or Guillaume le Batard times.

Hmm food for thought. My Grandfather mentioned a Cavaye whilst serving with the British Army as an officer, and recalls mention of His French ancestry. Though He is now 87 years old so may be mistaken as he does lapse in and out of lucidity. He may well be very mistaken did Charles Walter's brothers have children?

Well done!  So it was Claire Cavaye's (mulatto) dress-shop mother Madeleine (negress) who had the affair with Lieut. Louis Cavaye (grand blanc) of the French army/navy.  And Louis was OUR Cavaye's great-grandfather!
That French connection should please Frederic and Pascal!

Charles Walter's brother, William Frederick Cavaye also served in the AZW with the 107th arriving after Isandhlwana, he eventually became Lt Colonel and Major General. He died in 1926. Amazingly, he had rejoined in the Great War and his medal entitlement card seems to show him as "storekeeper". If so, that's quite something for a 70 year old Lt. Colonel !
