Alan did much research (mostly family history details) into the soldiers of the 24th Foot who served in South Africa - the results are now held by the regimental museum in Brecon. He also co-edited with Lee Stevenson - Rorke's Drift by those who were there - an anthology of mainly of contemporary newspaper articles. in his younger days he served in the Gloucester Regiment and surprisingly was a keen member of the 1879 Group - I think it was the Sphinx (24th, 28th and Isandlwana) was the motivation. I have recently received reports on his death in Lydney, Gloucestershire - but have no details. Sadly, Alan has answered the final bugle call.

Another item to report - the dreadful fire in London a few days ago - the tower block was named after a Zulu war veteran - Field Marshal Lord Grenfell who was involved in the recovery of the Prince Imperial's body.
