Thanks for the Military History Sheet.
It was interesting to see that he had spent 16+ years in India, yet received no medals for his service over there ?

Seeking Assistance..........

I have a SAM issued to Pt. Creaney 1737 57th Regiment which is entitled to the 1879 Bar.
Unfortunately the medal was acquired without the swing & 1879 Bar.

I have been searching the internet to date without success and wondered if anyone can assist me to locate an original rather than a silver copy ? It would be great if this medal could be restored as issued.

Hi z.oz
Impi is correct , you can sometime get an original from ebay . Not sure how you can verify it though from the photos they provide. I think some of the leading Medal Dealers in the UK have them for sale from time to time , think I saw some for sale at Dixons medals earlier this year ?  scratch .

Seeking Clarification.......Medal issued with later impressing

805 Corp. F.G Grant 90th Foot Clasp 1877-8-9

The Roy Dutton book shows his regimental number listed as 815 ???
Can anyone confirm if the impressing is correct or the number as shown in the Roy Dutton Book is in fact accurate.

Hi again 90th,

Hmmm.......Disappointing.

Could this medal have been incorrectly impressed ? I have checked the dimensions and it is identical to those being known as correct ? Also there is no evidence of the rim being skimmed ?

So...........In any case I now have this medal at hand with an incorrect impressing ( 805 ).

Hi 1879 Graves,

Confusing, but happy if the medal numbering can be substantiated as being correct. Any particular reason why the Roll and reference books would have been different to that as shown on his service record ?
In any case THANKS for checking this one and I will certainly look forward to seeing the images.
( which I will copy and keep with this medal )

Hi z.oz.
The Rolls , either Forsyth's or Dutton's are not without error , I dont know if the Dutton Roll was copied from the Forsyth Roll to be honest . Once ' Graves the Guru ' posts the service papers , all will be revealed  You need to study mo   You need to study mo . I've noticed recently the Medals with the 77-78-79 Clasp are bringing a good price ! .

Hi 90th,

I collect mainly Australian, however, I have always had a fascination with the Zulu campaign. After watch the movie I started collecting them as well. The collection has grown a little since then but nothing really special like a Rorke's Drift recipient.

Seeing that your in Melbourne , maybe we could meet for a coffee and discuss the collection some time ??

"Queenstown Volunteer Contingent"

Can anyone advise me on where I can find information/history about this particular group ?

Especially interested in the exploits of "Captain A.N Ella"
Born in Yorkshire 1850. (Alfred Newsam Ella)

Hi z.oz
I checked the medal roll and the Queenstown Volunteer Contingent medals are all Clasp 1877 -78 , therefore they wont be in Terry Sole's decent work ' For God , Queen & Colony ' . Not sure where you will find the information your after , I know there is an online site but I dont have any details , possibly JY or Springbok may have an idea of the websites name , possibly use google , something might pop up .

DNW Auction Result.....12/5/15

As an update on recent sales, it would appear the estimation by DWN was way off the mark ?

South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Bt. Major. C. E. Foster. 58th Foot.) good very fine Est. £1000-1200

Sold at hammer for 2,200 Pounds !

DNW estimates are invariably below the hammer price - this is to suck you in to bidding!!

prices for SAGS appear to be on the up. Although auctions can go crazy like fior this medal. My Absentee bid was just below the final bid - I hope it wasnt you 90th!!

Welcom Z.oz to the frustrating world of the SAGS collector!!

lucky you - can you take a couple of pictures of where they think pope and goodwyn-austen fell -one looking back to the camp and one looking towards the Zulus. :-)

On another point - I ws checking a couple of sources which disagree on the subject of wether they were in red coats or blue patrol coats. Any opinions anyone?

Hi Sergio
Unless I saw it incorrectly it seems Liverpool medals sold an Isandlwana Casualty medal for 4,500 GBP's , I didn't read the blurb on it , was something wrong with it ????? . I see they also sold a NMP medal , the chap was out with LC . I was tempted but missed it , it was expensive though ! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked . Will try to remember , about Pope etc , I was in that area on sunday , I took some pics , will try and get out there again today , I want to go to the perceived position of the firing line , just need to get a lift down there ! , I'm the only guest today and was yesterday as well , we have to pick up Rob Gerrard from Ladysmith hosp sometime today we think ? .

Sergio
That's a highly debatable point. There is a reference to 'glass eyes, being killed on the saddle, a reference to the monocles worn by Goodwyn Austen. There was also a reference to the bodies being found and the position being marked with an iron. that went walk about though so no record exists. Snook patronisingly dismisses those claims because it doesn't fit into his pre conceived plan of action and retreat. He maintains they fell down on the firing line.

Interesting about the occupancy when I enquired about coming up to join you they were fully booked.
Whats wrong with walking down to the firing line? Heck Cavaye and Mostyn ran there, c'mon pretend your being chased by some indigenous chappies with sharp sticks. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Frank & Sergio,

Who the heck is Goodwyn Austen?

Do you mean this man?

Lieutenant Frederick Godwin-Austen, 2nd Battn., 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment.
John Young Collection.

Note the cord of his monocle by the top toggle of his patrol jacket.

(0th the casualty medal at Liverpool had been brooched and restored hence the lower price !! But half of what you would normally expect to pay seem acceptable. No I dea of the damage done to the medal and one assumes the clas would not be the original.

I saw the NMP medal but like you thought it ws very expensive - I picked up one to Trooper Jones a couple of years back at over 50% less than the asking price. However it sold !!

Having said that judging by the DNW auction and the dealers getting cleared out of their SAGS it would appear there is a lot of buying interest at the moment. I just thought it was you !!

Enjoy your trip

Hi Sergio
No my friend , I've been here for two weeks , no new medals as yet , but keeping my eyes open , although not from here ! . I did walk out to the firing line , found the RA Memorial as well , as I was making my way from Pope's to the front gate . Ill send you what I snapped at the perceived ' G ' Co position , also took the pics looking back to the mtn , don't know when I'll get around to sending them , need to get the daughter to put them on the Laptop . Which is easier said than done ! .

Thanks Raj

Bide's service papers also exist at the PRO .

Always keen to hear about other lancer's SAGS.

the medal scarcity continues very few SAGS held at the dealers at the moment. If anyone is interested London Medals have these groups on at the moment. Interesting but too expensive for a Doctor and a VC action against the Sekukani .

The superb South Africa Zulu War 1879, Turco-Serbian War, Russo-Turkish War, and Congo Free State 1884 to 1886 group awarded to Mr. Ralph Leslie, Civil Surgeon, one time Sergeant Major with the Turkish Army in the Serbian War, Surgeon with the National Aid Society Ambulance in the Russian War, and recipient of the Belgium Order of Leopold, Order of the Congo Star, and Ottoman Order of the Medjidie, who was sent to the Congo on ‘a special mission for the King of the Belgians’.

The important South Africa Zulu and Sekukuni War’s Officer Casualty double Victoria Cross winning rescue group awarded to Captain J.C. Dewar, the 7th of Vogrie, 1st The King’s Dragoon Guards, later 11th Hussars, who when severely wounded in the attack against Sekukuni’s stronghold at Conference Hill on 28th November 1879, the two 94th Foot men who rescued him gained the Victoria Cross, and became Privy Chamberlain to both Pope Leo XIII and Pope Pius X.
