| I was sent this bio by Lee Stevenson or the late Alan Baynham Jones about the time they published ' Rorkes Drift by those that were there '.. can anybody fill in any of the unknown,, detail's. i'm in mind of those who know there way around the various census's.
25b/1304 PRIVATE JOSHUA LODGE 2nd/24th – 2nd Warwickshire Regiment of Foot Company B Pre-service life Born: Manchester, Lancashire date unknown. Baptised: Joshua Lodge. Parents: Details unknown. Siblings: Details unknown. Education: Details unknown. Employment: Details unknown. Military service Militia: Service unknown. Regular: Enlisted: Ashton, Manchester 03/03/1877. Attested: Ashton, Manchester 04/03/1877. His army papers (WO97/3308 are missing from the PRO at Kew, Richmond. 25b/1304 Private Joshua Lodge was first posted to the 2nd/24th Foot 16/01/1878. Served in the 9th Kaffir Wars of 1878. Anglo-Zulu War 11/01/1879 – 01/09/1879 25b/1304 Private Joshua Lodge was present at the defence of Rorke’s Drift. March 1879 made a monthly remittance of £20 to Mrs Lodge (Mother). Named on the Bourne Original Roll. Named on the Bourne Amended Roll. Named on the Chard Roll. Named on the Dunbar List. Service continued Continued service in the South Wales Borderers from 01/07/1881 but did not transfer. Appointed Lance-Corporal 01/11/1881. Promoted Corporal 01/01/1882. Reduced to Private 21/07/1882. Returned to England from India 01/05/1883. Confined to the cells from 22-26/06/1883. Discharge: 25b/1304 Private Joshua Lodge was discharged to the Army Reserve 28/06/1883 at Gosport, Southampton. Discharged from the Army Reserve at Manchester District 28/06/1889. Pension details unknown. Intended residence: The Albion Inn 2 Bank Street, Red Bank, Manchester. Issued with a travel warrant to Manchester value 19s 3d. (97p). Decorations & awards South Africa Medal 25/09/1877 – 02/12/1879 “Clasp 1877-8-9” The whereabouts of this medal is unknown. Post service life Marital status: Wife Sarah H Lodge born c. 1846 at Netherton, Yorkshire. No children known. Employment: c. 1900/01 “Compositor Letter Press Printer” living at 16 green lane, Ardwick St. Thomas, South Manchester with wife. Death: Joshua Lodge died 26/07/1906 at Ancoat Hospital, Manchester aged 49 years, his trade was given as “Iron Turner”. His address at the time of death was given as 17 Broughton Street, Manchester. The cause of death was given as “Heart failure due to excessive drinking”. An inquest was held 27/07/1906. Buried: Joshua was interned 28/07/1906 burial No.85052 in Sect I Grave No.2302 Phillips Park Cemetery, Manchester. The Registrar was Mr. A. Andrew and the Minister was Rev. H. Stowell. He is buried less than 50ft from 25b/593 Pte William Jones VC. Footnote: In the photograph below the flat gravestone visible is 2299. Lodge lies four graves to the left. 2303 is in the undergrowth. Unfortunately the area of common graves were covered up for over burial in 1910 with the result that Lodge is now some 20 feet down.

| Hi Les The following from Kris Wheatley's Legacy Series no 6 Henry Lodge ( Father ) 20 yrs old married Elizabeth Tetlow 19 yrs old 27/5/ 55 , marriage was at The Cathedral Parish Church in M'chester . Joshua Born 1/9/ 56 , then followed Emma then Fanny , these 3 were Christened 16 / 6 / 61 where the Parents were married 6 years earlier . The last of the children Mary was born in 1863 . At 14 Joshua was an Engine Fitter , Joshua enlisted at the depot in Ashton-under-Lyne near M'chester 3/3/77 . Attested for 25th Bgde the next day , however it wasnt until 16/1/78 when Joshua was posted to the 2nd Batt 24th Regt at Chatham . Joshua received 1 penny good conduct pay from 1 / 3 / 79 , made a reduced remittance of 1 Pound to his mother . Arrived Gibraltar 1/1/80 , left for India to quell the uprising in Aug 80 , peace was finalised before they arrived . 1 / 11/ 81 Promoted to Lce Cpl , 1/1/82 Cpl , on the 21 / 7 / 82 stripped of his rank back to Private , returned home from India 1 / 5 / 83 , no marriage certificate between 83 - 06 , in 1906 Joshua is working in an Iron Foundry . He was suffering from Alcoholism which resulted in his death due to to a Rupture of an Artery in the Cortex . Hopefully that fils some gaps for you Les Cheers 90th |
