| 1879graves,
I checked the Medal Roll for the 91st Regiment and found two Privates with the name of Conway.
The first was #1771 H. Conway who received the South Africa Medal with “1879” clasp.
The second was #1936 M. Conway who received the South Africa Medal without clasp. I think it is safe to eliminate this man.
It would be possible that his handwriting was misread by someone at the newspaper and they put a “W” for his first initial instead of “H.” The newspaper printed “C.L.A. Highlanders” for his regiment’s name instead of “P.L.A. Highlanders” (“Princess Louise’s Argyllshire” Highlanders.”) The misreading theory is strictly a guess on my part.
The father, James Conway, was a former Color-Sergeant in the 91st.
