| And 3 more from either Sikali's Horse or Foot, i.e. unknown. Sam, remember that these figures represent the bodies identified as NNC/NNH and buried. There is a record of some NNH troops' number of survivors, not just their casualties. See ES pp. 13-14. The others (esp. the NNC) are MIA - some of them would have escaped but there must have been many more killed on the trail or elsewhere. The only contemporary figure I have is that perhaps 300 natives escaped - but that's not based on any factual compilation, simply the evidence of a fugitive's eyes. At any rate I believe the official figure should be in the region of 3-400 higher. The true figure will never be known.

| On another note is it known why the Zikhali's Horse suffered so many casualties compared to the other troops ? Being at uni has unfortunately deprived me of access to my Zulu books to check Cheers Sam |

| One thing to bare in mind is that the Edendale men stayed together in a body (maybe other units did so, I do not recall) and they had some ammunition (at least until they had crossed the Buffalo), the 50 odd organised troopers would have been a formidable opponent for scattered pursuing Zulus, who probably would have left them alone, in favour of easier prey.
Maybe if the Zikhalis, were more scattered of had less ammunition, they may have suffered more during the retreat.
Just a thought. |

| Sam Bear in mind the Sikali troops' location. They must have been obliged to get through the camp area or the melee behind it which was considerably more constricted than the relatively 'unoccupied' ground betwee davies & Henderson's troops and the saddle area. |
