Major Godson served with the King's Dragoon Guards in the Zulu war of 1879 in the sauadron under Major Marter, and took part in the capture of King Cetywayo (Medal with Clasp).

Captain R.G.Godson 1st KDG's , Exchanged into the 3rd Hussars , served at Conference Hill until Aug 25th , when , with his troop , he joined the detachment under Maj Marter at Fort Newdigate ( also known as Fort Funk ! ) relieving Capt Thompson's troop , took part in it's subsequent services , including the capture of the King . ( Godson also drew a map of the capture site , and surrounding area )
