Privates John Bly & James Dick 2/24th RD Defenders

The final resting places of two more of the Rorke's Drift defenders;

2/24 1697 Private James Dick died Secunderabad , India February 1897 - Buried "Secunderabad RC Cathedral"

2/24 2427 Private John Bly died Liverpool June 1910 - Buried in an unmarked grave, Walton Cemetery, Rice Lane, Liverpool

(I'm told there is little chance of locating the exact grave in Walton Cemetery, but if there is anyone up that way who fancies a challenge ?)

I deleted my previous post , I confused James Dick with William Dicks ( who was discharged at Gosport , not James Dick as I posted earlier ) James Dick.. according to James Bancroft , claimed his Discharge as time served in Secunderabad on 20 Feb 89 , his conduct being describes as Exemplary .

There is a James Dick - a Dock Labourer, born Island Magee, Co Antrim c1847, living at 23 Adelaide Street, Liverpool with his wife Ellen Jane (married 1894/5?) on the 1911 Census.

James Dick, (age 49 years - born Island Magee, Ireland), died of chronic dysentery 27th January 1897 - listed as a 'Chelsea Pensioner' in official records

Burial records confirm that he was a 'Pensioned Private 24th Regt South Wales Borderers'
