In Snook's HCMDB and Lock/Quantrill's Zulu Victory, they both mention Lieutenant Pat Daly waving to a European Officer of the NNC who was riding by for safety.
Has anyone found the primary source this was taken from? I've had no luck so far.

Finally sound the source. It's a letter by James Sivewright to Mrs. Merriman, published in The Merriman Correspondence. It's listed in Hill of the Sphinx. I'll try to track this volume down.

In a letter to Mrs. Merriman, dated 26 Jan from Pietermaritzburg, J. Sivewright writes... "Pat Daly was seen waving his hand, and shouted to some of them as they rode off, then turned and stuck firmly to his post with the last of his men..."
No clue as to who the "them" mentioned could be, but it seems reasonable to conclude it would have been a survivor who a) knew Daly and b) arrived at Pietermaritzburg shortly after the disaster. Sivewright does include a somewhat accurate anecdote regarding Melvill and Coghill, and one about Col. Glyn finding the body of "little Noddy" unmutilated. Or perhaps merely a wild rumor, albeit a very specific one.

"Lieutenant James Patrick Daly (Irish) – His body was found among about 60 British dead who made a “last stand” near the Banks of the Manzimnyana stream behind Isandlwana. His body was recovered by his brother, who also served in Zululand at the time and taken back to the UK – One of only a few British dead from the battle who were not buried where they fell. He was 23 at the time of his death."
Hi Littlehand, I think the writer of the above is confused with his fellow subaltern, Lt Anstey, also of F Coy 1-24th who some sources have at the Manzimnyama. Anstey's remains were recovered by his brother and repatriated to England.

Littlehand,
There are a number of inaccuracies in the article, the information regarding Daly is just one of them. I have discussed some of them with the author but they remain uncorrected.
