John P. Foote (sometimes Foot) was born at Buckland Newton, Cerne Abbas, Dorset, and attested for the 30th Foot at Dorchester on 10 August 1859, aged 17 years 11 months. He was appointed Drummer on 7 October 1860 and served as such until 30 November 1869, when he transferred to the 2/24th Foot as a Private to serve as Drum Major, to which rank he was appointed on 2 August 1870. He served overseas in Canada for 7 years 11 months, in South Africa for 1 year 11 months, at Gibraltar 7 months, and in the East Indies for 4 years 3 months. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in 1880 and was discharged on 7 June 1881."
