Ive asked JY to post a photo of the size of the celebrations, it dwarfs last years 140th. There are thousands of traditionally dressed zulu ready for a re enactment. i struggled getting out of the area because the right horn had taken over the road.
Virtually the entire population for a 20mile radius is either there or making there way.
Pity for the bus load of people that rocked up for a battlefield tour, no access at all.

I drove past the battlefield this morning on my way home. Pigsty would be an apt description. A sea of empty water bottles, pile after pile of rubbish. Really brings tears to the eyes to believe a nation as proud as the Zulu people could treat this hallowed ground with such disgusting disregard for the memory of their dead ancestors.
Is this filthy trashed devasted heros acre really what they all died for?
This is really a curtailed version of the e mails that have been sent this morning to the office of the premier, the Royal family and the Department of arts and culture.
Ive often heard it said that an untidy desk is a result of an untidy mind, possibly the adjectives above should be applied to the minds of those responsible.

Hi Frank,

Trouble is, I spose that such celebrations are now seen as a commercial enterprise (rather like a Rock concert).....and that always comes with a price to the environment.

A few years (well many years - pre kids) I went to Stonehenge with my girlfriend (now wife) for the solstice - didn't do much for me, sat on a 'rock' drinking a bottle of JD....but it trashed the area.

Can't see from your photo but I wouldn't be surprised if there were not 'braai' vans and other fast food sellers in evidence....its all about making a quick quid or rand nowadays

There was an article on the radio this week saying much the same. Places with any sort of appeal, whether it be historical or picturesque, just become victims of their own success. A sad state of affairs but seems to be symptomatic of the times, regardless of populace. It's that mentality of,
'well some one else will tidy up'.

Cannock eh?

On a similar idea, we have an awful job getting the workers (where I work) tidying up after themselves.....overalls/PPE on the floor, 'clean as you go' etc.

I try telling them they wouldn't do that at home with their coats/clothes because they would have to pick them up - but at work - someone else will always do things....

Yeah. I did notice you were just down the road.
I get my kids at school to clean up after themselves, but at home, my girls are rubbish.(no pun intended)
A pity such places as Isandlwana cant be kept free from development, too. Lots of bulding etc, but I guess that is progress and tourism.

I actually spent 40 odd years living in Rugeley and spent many a happy hour tramping round the pubs & playing cricket round Cannock

Hi

For my sins I am a table-top wargamer and figure collector - and I just get into subjects because of learning about my latest 'fad'.

I suppose I got into the Zulu War through the usual route - my dad taking me to see Zulu at the Plaza (now a Weatherspoons) in the mid 70's......Caine and Baker have a lot to answer for.....

I moved over to Uttoxeter about 14 years ago - my daughter still lives there - she went to school in Cannock.

My old school closed down years ago in Rugeley - we went from 3 comprehensives down to two.

Interesting. I used to do Napoleonic and Ancient Greek wargames (30 odd years ago) using the wargames research group rules. My cousin was a big fan and we whittled away the late hours playing, with a tipple of a single malt. I have actually been considering getting some Zulu war figures to paint up.
My school in Cannock had a plaque for the old boys school. Was that yours?

Yup I remember WRG well......the monotonous chants of "10 at 5 =25" "10 at 6 = 30" etc

Rules and figures have come a long way in the 30 years....much better than Hinchcliffe & Minifigs etc. (Ok much more expensive now but better).

I used to go to Aelfgar School - it was a comprehensive school when I went there but it was the old Senior Boys School many years before.

Was trying to pm you. As a matter of interest, what war games rules do you use? Have you come across Total War on the pc?

Hi, not sure if the PM facility is 100%. I've had a message in my outbox for a few days.....its either that or the intended recipient has 'blocked' me.

I can be reached on [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
