Isandlwana - The 3rd iSandlwana Commemorative Lecture Empty
PostSubject: The 3rd iSandlwana Commemorative Lecture   Isandlwana - The 3rd iSandlwana Commemorative Lecture EmptyFri Feb 11, 2022 9:41 am

Yesterday, I was part of an online invited audience for the 3rd iSandlwana Commemorative Lecture, hosted by the South African Military Museum, Saxonwold.

The title of the lecture was Rocking the British Army: Triumph of the Zulu Impi at the Battle of Isandlwana, 22 January 1879, and it was delivered by Dr. Fankie Monama, a senior lecturer in the Department of Military History, Faculty of Military Science (South African Military Academy) at the Stellenbosch University.

I had hoped for a fresh prospective on the battle given the dramatic title of the lecture, sadly it was not to be.  Far too much of the address was given over to the Confederation Policy, and far too little - in my opinion - emphasis on the Zulu army and their triumph at iSandlwana.

I was less than impressed that the photograph titled as Inkosi Cetshwayo was actually that of Prince Ndabuko kaMpande, when I posed that to Dr. Monama, he replied that his graphics had been compiled in haste.  That said Dr. Monama is not the only one to be duped into that mistake...

Thats a shame John.
You like to think that being a SA University they might have had access to or found some new material which would make us all sit up and look at things in a different light.

A missed opportunity.
