"Veteran Soldiers Death
Mr Frederick Johnson of 12 Studland Street an old inhabitant of Hammesmith passed away on Thursday of last week at the age of 70 years after a long and painful illness having had both of his legs amputated.
Mr Johnson was a pensioner of the Zulu War serving in Zululand in 1879 with the Duke of Cambridgshires Own 17th Lancers. He was also presnt at Rorke's Drift and the battle of Ulundi and was with Lord Chelmsford's company when the Prince Imperial of France was killed. He was one of the party that found the Prince and helped carry his body back to camp. He served 16 years with the 17th Lancers. The funeral took place on Tuesday at Hammersmith cemetery, the body being conveyed on a gun carraige."
