"OLD SOLDIERS DEATH. The funeral took place on Wednesday of Mr. John Philip Chittenden, of Hudson's Bay, St. Catherine's Street, who passed away on Saturday after a week's illness. Mr. Chittenden came to Ventnor for the benefit of his health about 22 years ago. He served in the Zulu war, and, after his discharge from the Army, became a bank messenger."
Portsmouth Evening News - Thursday 14 June 1923
Interestingly here is a 48 John Chittenden who enlisted in the Cape Mounted Rifles but was out before the AZW. Without going through my medal roll I wonder if this is the same chap?
Looks like he was unable to write as he just marked a cross for his name and 'John Chttenden' was written in. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
