"John W. Cooke. a retired yacht master, who died at Cowes yesterday, at the age of 7O. had a remarkable career. After starting life at sea. be took up a farming in South Africa, where he served with distinction with the Natal Volunteers in the Zulu War, being promoted captain. Afterwards for five years he commanded the Turkish coast gaurd service and had many thrilling experiences in suppressing slave traffic and smuggling in the Red Sea"
