Film Zulu: Private Henry Hook: Rourke's Drift... It'd take an Irishman to give his name to a rotten stinking middle o' nowhere hole like this.

The son mentioned in the report was Grenfell Horace Gerald Smith-Dorrien.

He was killed in action on 13th September 1944 in Italy whilst commanding the 169th Infantry Brigade.

Brigadier Smith-Dorrien is buried in the cemetery of Gradara in the Province of Pesaro.

Kate,

Little more information regarding Smith-Dorrien’s other sons which I feel add to the family history.

Smith-Dorrien’s second son, Brigadier Peter Lockwood Smith-Dorrien, was numbered amongst those assassinated in the King David Hotel bombing in Jerusalem, then in Palestine under the British Mandate, on 22nd July 1946.  The Irgun claimed responsibility for outrage as part of the liberation struggle to create the State of Israel.

David Pelham Smith-Dorrien, who I met back the 1990’s, was taken as a prisoner of war in North Africa whilst serving in the 8th Army.  He escaped from his p.o.w. camp and organised a group of anti-Fascist partisans in Italy.  He was eventually recaptured attempting to join up with the Allied landing at Anzio.  He again escaped from custody, and again he was recaptured.  Someone in the German command structure apparently recognised his surname and because that and his previous history of escapes, they sent him to Colditz.

Further details about his accident and a fottong line in his memorial leaflet. Could apply to his sons as well.
