As I had some jobs to do in the area I decided to ride up to Manuden church to see if I could find his grave.
There were a couple of Chappells in the grave yard at the front of the church (shown at the bottom of this post) and after much searching in the secondary graveyard which is located about 100 yards to the rear of the church down a narrow lane found his wifes rotten wooden cross gradually being consumed by ivy leaning against a rotten stump. John Robert Chapell was born in Farnham, Essex on the 21st June 1858
In 1884, upon leaving the army, he married Farnham born Alice Dellow (daughter of Joseph and Eliza Dellow of Farnham Green, Farnham and baptised on the 29th December 1861) and settled at Chatter End, Farnham, in Essex.
He was still living there in 1891 and 1911 whilst working as an agricultural labourer.
