| Frank,
No, I don’t think so. The 21st Hussars officer was Walter, rather than William.
As a Major in the 21st (Empress of India’s) Lancers he charged at Omdurman on 2nd September 1898. During the charge his horse was killed, and he was surrounded by Dervishes. He was rescued by Captain Paul Aloysius Kenna, of the 21st Lancers, for his actions Kenna received the Victoria Cross.
Here is Kenna’s citation:
He assisted Major Crole-Wyndham by taking him on his horse behind the saddle, Major Wyndham’s horse having been killed, thus enabling him to reach a place of safety. He subsequently returned to assist Lieutenant de Montmorency who was endeavouring to recover the body of Lieutenant Grenfell.
