Admin I have given this a new thread as it contains some interesting details that would soon be lost in the Lewis narrative thread Unfortunatly the newspaper was not scanned in properly hence a couple of lines missing from the top of two columns were thay have been cut off.

Kate Thanks for posting this. I used Lewis's 1879 account in the South Wales Daily News for my Wrecked Camp essay but I didn't know about this 1936 one. I found the little detail about Timothy Neagle very poignant. I can confirm that Neagle, as one might expect, was also in H coy.

What I find interesting (and this will gladden the heart of any Pulleine supporters out there) is that it gives a first hand account of Lord Chelmsford adopting the same formation as Pulleine when faced with a threat.
Imagine if LC he had been attacked that evening. With the encircling horns he may have suffered the same fate.

Absolutely. Well, he wrote the description of the formation. Although it isn't mentioned here, the 'cavalry' were also placed in his desired position.

Hi Kate. There really is so much in that report, Ive been going through it with interest. His description of the bodies 'through the pass' stretching for a long distance seems to agree with the discussions we have had in the past and the potential of the bodies buried in the Manzimnyama cairns. Still cant agree though on the 'Pullein fighting formation being by design rather than serendipity. Heading up to iSandlwana at the end of September for a few days with a couple of forum members, looking forward to some R and R.
Cheers
