| Hi All, Archibald Graham Wavell 9th Zulu War. There are many mistakes in his service record dates. Born 18 Nov 1843 Little Somborne Hampshire, Ensign 9th 28 July 1863, to Cape 16 Oct 1865 to Sept 1870, Fort Adjutant Kingswilliamtown 1 Nov 1868 to 31 march 1870, no more service abroad until Natal 2 June 1879 to 27 Aug 1879, but also stated Special Service Officer 28 May 1879 to 12 Oct 1879, and Taken on Strength of Natal Field Force 2 July 1879, returns UK, Staff Officer of Volunteers Cape Town 10 Jan 1880 to 13 Oct 1881, also states In Colonial Service against Rebel Basuto's and Tembu's 1880 1881, also includes dates 6 Feb 1880 to 13 Oct 1881. He Marries Eliza Bell Percival 25 Aug 1880 this is Registered in Congleton Cheshire, but the Minister is the Vicar of Cape Town, as he was or should have been in Africa on this date, I think he married in Cape Town and the Cheshire registration is wrong. They had three children including Archibald Percival Wavell C in C Middle East WW2, who also served in the 2BW and lost an eye in WW1. Our Archibald died 2 March 1935 at Cranbourne Lodge, Wiltshire, he is buried in St Mary & St Bartholomew Churchyard Cranbourne, with the simple inscription Husband of Lilly Wavell. Rai KLH |
