| Hi All A, Joseph A Wilson probably dies March Qtr 1925 in Newark District aged 86. This would give a birth date of circa 1838/39. I found no soldier of the 24th under the name Joseph or J Wilson serving 26 years, using the usual dates 1840/1862. However using the above information i did find, Joseph Wilson enlisted 29 Dec 1858 age 20, born 1838 in Baldestone Newark. To 2/24th No.620, he served in Mauritius and India, he was discharged at Brecon 20 July 1880 his papers being signed by Godwin-Austen, Penn-Symons and Heaton. On his actual pay/date paper it states transferred SWB Militia 6 July 1877, and transferred to Notts Militia 26 Jan 1878 with a final discharge date 3 Aug 1880 this gave just over 21 years service. A day later he re-enlists 4 Batt Derbyshire Regt [Militia] serving 4 Aug 1880 to 3 Aug 1885, this gave him a total service of 26 years. I think this is the man in the newspaper report not Joseph Wilson No.2596 2/24th. Rai Keynshamlighthorse. |

| Hi Again, Think i cracked it, 1891 census King St, Newark on Trent, he born Balderton Newark, Engine Driver, Wife Mary A, born Brecon 1858, 6 kids including John WW1, 1901 census 3 Boundary Road, Newark, he is a Gardener, wife Catherine born Malta 1859, 3 kids, 1911 census 3 Boundary Rd Newark, he is a Rtd Army Pensioner, Wife Mary born Maltan. 1921 census same address wife Mary Ann Catherine. Marriage Sept Qtr 1877 in Brecknock District [includes Brecon] Joseph Wilson to Mary Ann C [there are two entries Orliff and Orlipp] i think both of these are wrong and it should be Orlopp and her brother would be Drummer J.F. Orlopp 1/24 KIA at Isandhlwana. Rai Keynshamlighthorse. |
