PostSubject: SA medal to a Casualty of the 80th Foot.   SA medal to a Casualty of the 80th Foot. EmptySun Jan 01, 2023 4:51 pm

A Happy New Year to all. Despite having been a member for some years this is my first Post and may be of interest only to a few.
Having has casualty medals to the 24th, I have recently been selling my collection, retirement etc. However, whether 'on line' or through the various magazines I am always drawn to the adverts for medals to casualties in war and always the 24th. I find them almost irresistible. I am not sure whether I am alone in this but, let's see.
Yesterday whilst passing some time visiting some sites I saw the above medal 'recently' acquired and put up for sale. I think this medal, to a casualty of the 80th Foot killed at the Intombi river, is unusual simply because I have not seen many come up for sale, whereas, and despite my emotional attraction to the 24th, these are far more numerous.
This medal is to Put. H. Ruffle and is for sale by a small family militaria collector shop in Leominster, Herefordshire. This is 'War & Son'. They have quite a few images of the medal as well as a decent write up associated with the action.
I have no connection with the shop or the owners I offer this information simply as an interesting medal which by their very nature are scarcer that for Casualties to the 24th at Isandlwana. Further, this may be possibly be of interest to others like me who cannot afford significant collections but at times have been able to reach out for that odd 'special item' in a topic which brings us all immense pleasure, the events in Zululand all those years ago.

Hi All,
Henry Ruffle Pvt 2070 awarded Indian General Service Medal 1854-1895, he must have been awarded this early from about 1854 it would also give a early birth date 1830 to 1840. Looking at census records there are a large number of Ruffle families living in the district of Crondall, Hartley Whitney, Hampshire, also Essex. Only Henry i found other then the above, is a Royal Artillery man from Crondall.
