Natal Witness Thursday 23rd June 1881
By special desire of General Wood, Major Macgregor D.A.A.G. accompanied by several Engineers and Kafirs left here this morning, their destination being Kambula. They took several tombstones with them that have been sent out from England, to be erected over the graves of Captain Sandeman and other officers who died during the late Zulu War. Sir Evelyn Wood makes frequent enquiries if the graves at Kambula have been disturbed by the Kafirs, and the replies have been always in the affirmative. The General is much annoyed at this intellegence

Also in the same paper
A large number of officers have leave of absence. I believe in several instances they have had good sport, whilst others are on trips to Zululand visiting places of interest.

Natal Witness Friday 1st July 1881
Fort Amiel 25th June 1881
Major Macgregor duly arrived back from Kambula yesterday, with Engineers after executing their mission successfully, viz., erecting tombstones over the officers who fell during the late Zulu War; they found that the graves had been undisturbed, but a large number of trees etc had been uprooted, not by the Zulus, but by the Boers, who are talking very loud in that direction.
