Thanks Kate it seems Thomas Anstey went to Isandlwana in November of the same year to draw up his maps
Military Survey Map : which gives the Pickett locations and is the only written source indicating the locations.
and also those famous maps which Ron Lock and Peter Quantrill bought to our attention in their thesis the Missing Five hours.

Do we know when Thomas arrived in Natal ?

Hi Inky
Sorry I don't know when he arrived.
I'd have to go back through the Natal Witnesses and look at the shipping arrivals to see if he is there.
May take some time as there is no search facility. I am having to go though each copy, page by page and scan reading it all.
Anyone else on the forum know the date he arrived?
Kate

Kate
Capt. Thomas Henry Anstey, R.E. was certainly in SA in time to serve in the war.  He had “served with [Maj.-Gen.] Newdigate’s [IInd] Divis[ion] in the advance from Koppie Allein, and was present at the battle of Ulundi.  [He] subsequently made a triangulation survey of the route taken by the Divis. from Landman’s Drift to Entonjaneni.  On [his] return to Maritzburg [he] was ordered to survey in detail the battle-field of Isandhlwana and the ground adjacent thereto.” (Mackinnon and Shadbolt, p. 328).
Capt. Anstey finished his map of the battlefield and the surrounding country on 11th and 13th November respectively after which he turned his attention to recovering his brother’s body.
Aussie
Just to be clear in case you're uncertain, Anstey didn't draw the maps which L&Q found - he drew the original cloth map of which reproductions were found by L&Q on which annotations had been added by hand.
