The Hampshire Advertiser 14/02/1880 has Samuel McClune still serving with the 24th Regt., but, he is again in trouble from the demon drink. A Police court charge of drunk and disorderly, although he was handed over to his commanding officer to be dealt with.

There is a WW1 record for a Samuel McClune, details as follows:

No. 19617, McClune, Samuel, Royal Irish Rifles
born. Shankhill, Belfast
age. 44 years 3 months*
date. 25/09/1914

Says he served in the 2nd Bn. Royal Irish Rifles but was discharged for being drunk!

An application for discharge was signed off on 08/12/1914 whilst serving with 15 Royal Irish Rifles, his age is given as both 56 and 58* and he is described as decrepit.

For context No. 1346 Samuel McClune transferred from the 86th Regt. into the 24th Regt. in February 1879. The 86th Regt. became the 2nd Bn. Royal Irish Rifles in the reforms in the early 1880's. The age on the discharge application would give him a birth year sometime in the second half of the 1850's.

Is this conclusive, no, but based on probability this would appear to be the man.
