Bt. Major. Pelly Clarke. of the 103rd Foot. Arrived in Natal on two months’ privilege leave from Mauritius in Oct. 1878. Though in a bad state of health at the time, he gave up his leave and was temporarily appointed by Lord Chelmsford Staff Officer to Col. Pearson’s Co lumn. Towards the end of December. he was relieved by an officer sent
out from England, and was appointed Director of Transport to the column, and in that capacity superintended the crossing of the Tugela of the Transport; accompanied the column to Eshowe; was present at the battle of Nyezane, and was with the column throughout the siege. On arriving in Natal was directed to return to Mauritius to take up his appointment there. (Mentioned in despatches.)
