Thomas Dann born Roscrea, Tipperary, joined the regiment at Dublin aged 22 years, on 30th April 1877, trade Ironmonger.
Served 21 years with the regiment, then transferred to the Army Service Corps until discharged in 1899. The regiment reached Durban on April 8th and the two wings disembarked to commence their march to Rorkes Drift via Pietermanitzberg and Dundee. At the latter the regiment was joined by the 17th Lancers and together forming a cavalry brigade, finished the last stage of their journey. On May 21st before daylight, the cavalry brigade crossed the Buffalo River to carry out a reconnaissance of the field at Isandlwana.Where on 22nd January 1879 the central column was annihilated by 25,000 Zulu's. Whilst at the scene of the battle this force buried some of the dead and brought away a number of wagons.
