| Here's the scoop: I need to conduct genealogy research for an academic project, and create a detailed report about my family and their roots and highlight it with a family tree. How do I go about doing it? How do I begin? What are some good websites? Other sources? This is not only intellectually interesting, but its for a project grade (40%). Please help me. Thank you in advance. :)

| Hello , first question is where are you based and do you know anything at all about you family history .
Ask any elderly relatives what they know and then you can start to work on the internet - the first thing is to try to find out where your family were living in 1901 (hopefully in England ) and then you can search the census' on line .
If your surname is not a very common one then you can also search the Birth , Marriage and death indexes . Commonly know as the BMD .
There are many good sites available but many are pay to view . I use mainly ancestry.co.uk , you can subscribe or just pay as you view.
If you would like me t o search a specific name then please send me a PM .
best regards , Gary. |

| Hi, Checked with your older relatives, but do not, count every story as being true, [we have seen it numerous times 'granfather fought at Rorkes Dridt'] There are a number of free sites avaiable, as already quoted freebmd will give you access to Births Marriages and Deaths in the UK from 1837 this is the first date of registration of BMD's. Before 1837 BMD's were mainly listed in the parish records of where the person lived many of these are online but you need to be rather lucky if your parish you are looking for is online. I found a friends family dating back to the mid 1650's by checking for the parish. Another good free site is familysearch, run by the latter day saints of utah, dont be put off by that the site includes the 1881 census, the international genealogy index, and other census records from round the world all free. Very good for international data, and a lot of peoples research is free online. the 1901 site you need to pay for credits. Rai Keynshamlighthorse. |

| Hi , i downloaded my grandfathers medal card and discovered he was a deserter . Fought from 1915 to the end of WW1 and then deserted in 1920 , still researching to find out why .
Cheers , Gary. |

Rai. Is there a charge for looking at parish records. There is an old chest in our local church that contains all the records of those buried in the churchyard. But I always thought it was not available to the public. |

| Hi Littlehand, I think this all depends on the church, mostly being locked you might have to make an appointment to see them. In a lot of places they have been moved to the local records office, ie for wiltshire churches they are at wiltshire records office, they are free to look at but you will need a library/records office card to view them.. Many are free online, but if you go to a family history society you will be charged. Rai. Keynshamlighthorse. |

| Thanks Rai.
I suppose you would need a reason for going through the records, There is no one from my clan buried there, but i would just be interested to see the records in general. |
