In the dioramas of the war against the Zulus (1879) is essential in the trenches with sandbags.
Tactics based on parapets or create trenches with earth filled bags.
How convenient would have been, also use the wire.
The first use of barbed wire in the war were the Spanish in Santiago de Cuba, during the siege of this place by U.S. troops. (Norteamaricana Islands War for Independence in Cuba; year: 1898.)
Below, excerpted from my website, a diorama of Spanish Marines in the war in Cuba. (Figures in plastic. Scale 1 / 30 subject to customization.)

The pleasure is to make your dream.Highly customized plastic soldiers ....... Marine Infantry of the Spanish Army Overseas (year: 1898) of U.S. intervention in support of the independence of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. But in reality, the U.S. intentions were only to take over the business and sell newspapers ...... And spread its tentacles expansionist ......Jorge Wink

..... Continuing the theme of the Hispano-American War of 1898, I link to you a few pages of a famous mark time figures of different armies of the nineteenth century related to the British Empire and other countries.
In this case, the images are of soldiers exposed Yankees in Cuba. (1898)
