Captain, the Honorable Adolphus Edward Prendergast Vereker, 2nd Battalion, 20th Regiment of Foot.

The son of Lord John Prendergast Vereker, 3rd Viscount Gort and Maria O'Grady, he was born in 1833.

Lieutenant, 6th West York Militia - 12 December, 1854
Ensign without Purchase, 20th Regiment of Foot - 2 March, 1855.
Lieutenant - 16 October 1855
Captain - 30 November, 1860

Vereker served with his battalion in the Crimea at the siege and fall of Sebastopol and at the capture of Kinbourn. He
subsequently served during the Indian Mutiny with the selected marksmen of his battalion at Chanda, Umeerpore,
Sultanpore, Dhowraha Fort, the siege and capture of Lucknow, as well as actions at Onde, Chundra Musjeedia Fort
and Bankee.

He also served in Japan during the 1864 civil war where his battalion served as field artillery.
Captain Vereker died at Yokohama on 12 October, 1864. The 31 October, 1864 issue of The Illustrated London News
states that Vereker died of Smallpox.

Interestingly Adolphus Vereker was the uncle of Standish William Prendergast Vereker, Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion,
Natal Native Contingent, who was killed in action at Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 during the Anglo- Zulu War.
