Subject: Anniversary of Isandlwana approaching.... Thu Jan 20, 2011 10:03 pm
As the 22nd of January approaches, I wish to remember all the brave men who fought and lost their lives at the Battle of Isandlwana.
And to those who miraculously survived, including our ancestor, Trooper Robert Kincaide, God Bless each of you.

I'm just glad that even after 132 Years they are still remembered and talked about. "Fix Bayonets and Die Like Bristish Soldiers" RIP Lads...
Just think this time tomorrow, it will nearly be over.
Is a service of some sort going to be held at Isandlwana & R.D to mark the 132nd anniversary

On 21 January 1879, Chelmsford sent out patrols to try to locate the main Zulu impi. Maj. Charles Dartnell, that afternoon, reported an encounter with a large Zulu force.

To mark the 132nd (forgot to add that to my 'new topic') anniversary, my family and I are popping in Zulu Dawn and the original Zulu with Stanley Baker. Oh yes, the lads will always be remembered in this house.
We shall be with you in spirit (no pun intended) as those of you wayyyy across the pond raise your glasses for a toast to the lads from the 24th foot.

Well. Its going to be the last night on this earth for our boys camped out at Isandlwana back in 1879. Many of them sitting in their tents playing cards, writing letters home, talking about the good days back in England. Familey photo's being past around. All totally unaware that less than five miles away in a valley are waiting 20,000 Zulu warriors who are there to protect theirs lands from the British. Tomorrow the two sides will clash and the untimate victory will belong to the Zulu.

I'm thinking of young Fred Jackson, Natal Carbineers. The youngest Hero at Isandlwana. May the young man rest in peace... Gone by not forgotten.
No doubt forum member RobOats is remembering him in is own way... Be proud of him Rob. He stood his ground and fought a good fight.
"Fred's remains were found 20 Jun 1879 with those of Malcolm Moodie about 400 yards towards the camp from where Lt Scott and the other Carbineers were found with Col Durnford (Report from Lt Royston 30 June 1879 Natal Witness)".

Also remember those that were K.I.A at Inyanzani under the command of Colonel Pearson. Often over shadowed by Isandlwana & Rorkes Drift.

Those that did not remain to assist in the defence viz. Stevenson's Natal Native Contingent detachment, Henderson’s fugitive Natal Native Horse from Isandhlwana, Otto Witt and his native companion, Lieutenant Thomas Purvis 1st Battalion, 3rd Regiment, Natal Native Contingent - a hospital patient - who accompanied Witt to safety, Chard’s native voodooper, Chard’s native waggon driver who hid In a cave on the Oscarberg throughout the attack, and all those fugitives from Isandhlwana who stopped to give a warning and rode on. Of all the latter only Adendorff remained to assist in the defence and is thus the only man to have fought in both the Isandhlwana and Rorke’s Drift actions.

All over at Isandlwana. Now on to Rorkes Drift. "About 4.20 p.m. the sound of firing was heard behind the Oscarberg. The officer of Durnford's returned, reporting the enemy close upon us, and that his men would not obey his orders but were going off to Helpmakaar, and I saw them, about 100 in number, going off in that direction. I have seen these same men behave so well since that I have spoken with several of their conduct - and they all said, as their excuse, that Durnford was killed, and that it was no use. About the same time Captain Stephenson's detachment of Natal Native Contingent left us - probably most fortunately for us. I am sorry to say that their officer, who had been doing good service in getting his men to work, also deserted us. We seemed very few now all these people had gone, and I saw that our line of defence was too extended, and at once commenced a retrenchment of biscuit boxes, so as to get a place we could fall back upon if we could not hold the whole.
Private Hitch, 24th, was on top of the thatch roof of the commissariat store keeping a look-out. He was severely wounded early in the evening, but notwithstanding, with Corporal Allen, 24th, who was also wounded, continued to do good service, and they both when incapacitated by their wounds from using their rifles, still continued under fire serving their comrades with ammunition. We had not completed a wall two boxes high when, about 4.30 p.m., Hitch cried out that the enemy was in sight, and he saw them, apparently 500 or 600 in number, came around the hill to our south (the Oscarberg) and advance at a run against our south wall." Extract from Chards report.

JOHN ROUSE MERRIOTT CHARD (Lieutenant, afterwards Colonel) Royal Engineers. This officer was in command of the Rorke’s Drift Post on January 22nd 1879, when with about a hundred men, mostly of the 24th Regiment, the position was attacked by 4,000 Zulus. Throughout the entire defence, which lasted from 4 p.m. till daybreak next morning, Colonel Chard directed the operations with the most heroic bravery. The Lieut. –General in command of the troops reported that “had it not been for the fine example and excellent behaviour of these two officers under the most trying circumstances, the Defence of Rorke’s Drift Post would not have been conducted with that intelligence and tenacity which so essentially characterized it”; also “that its success must in a great degree, be attributable to the two young officers who exercised the chief command on the occasion in question.” The Defence of Rorke’s Drift will go down to posterity as one of the finest examples of British heroism, and the names of Chard and Bromhead will hold a prominent position in the annals of the British Army. The late Queen Victoria caused their names to be inscribed on the colour pole of the 24th Regiment, together with those of Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill, who fell so heroically on the banks of the Buffalo River on the same day, while endeavouring to save the colours of the regiment from the enemy after the Massacre of Isandlwana. Colonel Chard, son of Mr. W.W. Chard, of Pathe, Somerset, and Mount Tamar, Devon was born in 1847. Educated at Plymouth New Grammar School, Cheltenham and Woolwich he entered the Royal engineer in 1868. He was stationed at Bermuda for some time, ultimately going to South Africa on the outbreak of the Zulu War. After the Defence of the Drift, for which, in addition to the Victoria Cross, he was promoted Captain and Brevet-Major, he became ill of fever, and went to Ladysmith to recruit his health, but recovered sufficiently to take part in the battle of Ulundi. Towards the end of 1879 he was ordered home, and on his arrival at Plymouth was met by a telegram from the late Queen and received by her at Balmoral. He retired from the service in August 1897, and died at Hatch Beauchamp Rectory, near Taunton, Somerset, on November 1st 1897. Lt John R.M. Chard, R.E, Died 1st November 1897, Buried Hatch Beauchamp,Churchyard Somerset.

Remembered with pride all those brave men of British and Colonial forces that died this day 132 years ago today.
The family especially remembers our great uncle, Trooper Fred Jackson, of the Natal Carbineers; A mere boy but brave enough to enter the crucible of battle.
We salute you all.

It’s hard to imagine those poor soldiers who would have now been laying among the dead at Isandlwana probably hearing the rifle fire coming from Rorkes Drift not being able to do anything, and to think only hours before they were sitting, eating and laughing with there mates. I’m almost glad this day is over. But as I write this, those at Rorkes Drift are still in a grip of life and death. Back on that day 23rd January 1879.

The last shots were fired at two a.m. By dawn, the Zulus had withdrawn. Chelmsford's cavalry arrived that morning. The rest is History.

Well, now you've done it! I'm sitting here after watching that glorious bit of footage and I have tears coming down my eyes. Thank you for posting that and in addition to this great forum, that youtube is the best tribute to Rorke's Drift lads I've ever seen.

This is indeed another fine tribute, I especially like the background music because I remember it from "Last of the Mohicans" film w/Daniel-Day-Lewis as 'Hawkeye'.
