It's what he does 90th, TOWERBOY is a small time ebay medal dealer, 1879zuluwars, not an enthusiast.
This from his ebay shop:
" I have collected war medals for many years and because of the economic climate and work very quiet i have decide to unload some of my collection, if you see anything listed and want to ask any questions, please email me,i am also interested in Zulu war medals and items."

Shame really, perhaps we ought to organise a whip round for him!
(Hate for him to have to sell his entire collection)!

Thanks SD, but if SAGs keep increasing in price at their current rate, I won't be able to afford it. Shocked
I think I missed my chance on that one! (But I'd give you what you paid for it + costs, tomorrow)! Salute

Hi All .
This may not be the right thread but I've been a bit lazy because I couldnt be bothered posting them in the ebay thread , I checked ebay a day or so ago and there are from memory 7 or so SAGS medals up for sale !. One to Trpr Keough Natal Light Horse and another to a Lt W. Grey or Gray 5th NNC , the others I'm sure are Imperial Medals.
Cheers 90th Salute

I have seen the keogh medal - I bougt it then something else came up so I swapped it back with Justin at Jager. Its a nice medal and has the benifit of Keough having served for the FLH as well. Unusual and quite rare medal.

I am just in a research rather than aquisition mode in the run up to xmas (MrsD please note) so didnt buy both Sad

having said that - it that elusive 80th medal comes up or the cavalry lance - then Xmas Bah Humbug!!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-1879-NAVAL-ZULU-MEDAL-H-M-S-ORONTES-/281026758144?pt=UK_Collectables_Militaria_LE&hash=item416e800600

I know this is already on PO Tom's list - but it is on sale on Ebay at the moment.

I am not sure on the naming, Other Naval SAGS I have seen (which I must admit is a very low number) have had the HMS and the ship name at the top of the medal with the suspender seperating them. Is this always the case or is it just a coincidence.

Would appreciate some more knowledgable input.

Cheers

SergioD,

I am not a medal collector, but from what I have been able to come up with, it appears that there was more than one style of engraving on the South Africa Medals issued to the Royal Navy.

First Goup:

Recipient’s Name - Rank - HMS - Ship’s Name

”Active”
“Boadicea”
“Euphrates”
”Orontes”
“Tamar”

For all 5 of the above the letters were all Capital and slanted

Second Group

Ship’s Name - Recipient’s Name - Rank - HMS (Ship’s name & HMS would appear at the top, separated by the swivel)

“Forester”
“Shah”
“Tenedos”

For the above 3 there were some differences in the lettering.

“Forester” had all letters in Capitol and upright.

“Shah” had the recipient’s name and rank in all Capital letters and upright, however, the Ship’s name and HMS were in Capital letters, but of a smaller font, and slanted.

“Tenedos” was like that of “Shah”, except that the Ship’s name and HMS was upright instead of slanted.

There could be some variations in engraving styles due to a medal being issued to an individual who was not on the original medal roll, but later provided proof of entitlement. Duplicate medals issued many years later, to replace medals that were lost, might be in the style of engraving used at that time.

Hope this helps answer your question. Happy to be corrected.

SergioD,

Private George Waskett, RMLI, HMS Boadicea is already on the list. He is confirmed on the Medal Roll for South Africa Medal without clasp. I see they are now asking £550. I’m not sure what it sold for the last time around - I think it was just under £500.

I was doing some research recently, and ran across a newspaper story from the 1880’s in which a man reported the theft of his South Africa Medal. The woman who took it was charged with theft of property valued at 7s. Sometime later another gentleman, who had lost his medal, posted a reward of £1 for its return. At those prices I might become a collector.

Take it from me you dont want to start being a collector now Very Happy

Its a very compulsive, frustrating and expensive hobby as 90th and Tasker no doubt will agree.

However you do get to touch history, and honour the memory of those men who fought and died for Queen, country and their mates.
And nothing beats finding that elusive medal you have been looking for -or reuniting a group, or researching a medal to find full and interesting service papers or winning that auction at less than you were prepared to bid!!

Looks like I just argued against my first point.

Can I also add on behalf of us collectors , that the work you have done on this string is nothing short of miraculous and extremely useful. Thanks Tom.

Does anyone think there is value in doing something similar for 17th Lancers Medals known to exist? i would be happy to co-ordinate

Good suggestion SD. Go for it, I will contribute.
Could do one for the 1/24th, 2/24th and every other unit in the Cape really. I know some people very closely follow the existence of medals and where they have been sold etc; not really my thing but I do appreciate that it's a great source of info. If I were considering a naval SAG, I would certainlyt refer to POT's thread. Salute

South Africa Medal 1877-1879, no clasp. S. Corpl. 1. Cl. W.T. Carveth, H.M.S. Himalaya

this medal for sale with Chris Dixon at a respectable £400.

involvement in the azw was limited for the Himalaya - but I am sure Petty Officer Tom can give way more colour!!

SergioD,

Thanks for the Carveth medal. I will add it, and another for W. Glover, Ordinary, HMS Active, to the list.

Remember the medal is the “South Africa Medal”, and not the “Zulu War Medal.” Involvement in the Zulu War was less than limited for HMS Himalaya – it was non-existent. “Himalaya’s” period of service for entitlement to the medal was 9 March to 15 March, 1878.

Here is what information I have for Carveth.

William Thomas Carveth, Ship’s Corporal 1st Class (Navy Policeman)

31 Jul 1848 born in Stoke Damerel, Devonport

02 Aug 1862 Volunteered for service in Royal Navy. Issued Official Number 63017

Later given Continuous Service Number 23035A

Served on HMS Himalaya during the Cape Wars in 1878 for which all members of the crew were entitled to the South Africa Medal without clasp.

1881 he was serving on HMS Arab

Thanks for Grevatt, Harris and Hallett. They are already on the list.

At the request of Admin I have moved a copy of the Navy and Marines Medals that are known to exist to the new section “MEDALS KNOWN TO EXIST.” I will continue to post any updates on this section as I find new medals.

The most recent additions are:

Lieutenand A. B. Milne, HMS Active, Medal, with clasp “1879”. (This medal is in the National Maritime Museum.)

Private (RMLI) H. P. Picking, HMS Himalaya, Medal, no clasp. This man is also listed as H. P. Pickering on one copy of the medal roll. (His medal is located at the Royal Marine Museum.)
